R&P: Let's decide — What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 – Part 2)?

Welcome, to the next installment of the First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition). You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year.
I do ask that you listen to all of the songs… don't vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups.

Please star this early and often, e-mail your friends and let them know this is happening. E-mail strangers and enemies too, if you think they might be interested. I want to get as many votes as we can… make this a true R&P event. Let me know if you have trouble with the last.fm or youtube links and I'll get on them ASAP.

It's the second grouping of match ups.
MATCH UP 1:
"Summertime Clothes" – Animal Collective
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxhaRgJUMl8
Experimental for sure, but the musicianship and pop hooks across their breakthrough Merriweather Post Pavilion have put that album, even though it came out in the first weeks of January, at the top of many Best of 2009 lists. A solid entry that got the second-highest number of nominations.
VERSUS
"This Is Mr. Noel Gallagher" – Burnage Boys
http://www.last.fm/music/Burnage+Boys/_/This+Is+Mr+Noel+Gallagher?autostart
A little house music that appears to be more of an internet gag than a song, with samples of Noel and Liam Gallagher speaking… It got a nomination. People loved Crazy Frog, right?

MATCH UP 2:
"Tik Tok" – Ke$ha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RMx2435hP4
Some modern pop music seems to mistake trashiness and bland sexual references for coy sexiness with a slice of wit and imagry… a wink and a nudge. I'm not saying that's what's going on here… I'm just saying, this got a lot of votes. People couldn't find 10 better songs than this…. I'm losing my objectivity quickly so… moving on…
VERSUS
"3" – Britney Spears
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTs6oQx1WJY
see above — plus an obvious plug for her new signature fragrance.

MATCH UP 3:
"Oblivion" – Mastodon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kcErNWtw1o
There's a lot here to try an digest… it's one song from a concept album about Czarist Russia from a band that also did a concept album about Moby Dick.
VERSUS
"Swim to the Moon" – Between the Buried and Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_6Dybf024A
a metal epic in 2 parts. The second can be found by clicking on the green box in the video. See you on the other side.

MATCH UP 4:
"Mind Eraser (No Chaser)" – Them Crooked Vultures
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgn_ZOyFLiQ
These guys are all over this list — but this was their top vote getter. Supergroup!
VERSUS
"You're Going Down" – Sick Puppies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2bohKixLt8
A solid bass line, but if there's more to this… someone point it out to me below.

MATCH UP 5:
"Crying Lightning" – Arctic Monkeys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_G9RRY7SS0
The Arctic Monkeys this year showed a willingness to embrace new sounds, new ideas, and the ability to shift and change. It may not be their most lasting or important album, but it shows that they can be a lasting and important band. Josh Homme's (Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sessions, Them Crooked Vultures, Eagles of Death Metal) production can be felt all over this song. If we all had the time to listen to this song more than once — it would do so much better. It's a grower.
VERSUS
"Beautiful Thieves" – AFI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHzrGJQIlPk
Seemingly epic rock, with it's foundations in pop. Their new album seems like it was glossed over. I don't remember much attention being paid. They've gone the distance though, surviving the glossy pop of the early 2000s, and staying true to their arena-rock roots all the way through to today.

So listen to them, and pick a winner from each match up. I'll be nicer to pop songs in the future.
Go Democracy!

One Response to “R&P: Let's decide — What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 – Part 2)?”
  1. David says:

I am frustrated with the people who aren't respecting this process–either by simply naming their favorite 2009 songs and grossly ignoring the facts Waves is running a contest or by displaying their stubborn close-mindedness and not listening to the nominated songs from the pop genre (we understand, you're "hard," now get with the program!).

Now, to the matter at hand:

    "Summertime Clothes"
The obvious winner. It is a very strong song, which clearly displays the band's ability to blend their experimental style with sharp pop instincts.

    "3"
It's a decent pop song, in my opinion. Quality beat.

    "Oblivion"
I'm not a metal-head, but this was, for the most part, tolerable. And the concept's interesting.

    "Mind Eraser, No Chaser"
My favorite song from the album. Very entertaining song, with a powerful sound and interesting, fun lyrics. Cheers to Josh, John, and Dave.

    "Crying Lightning"
YES! The AFI song is decent, but nowhere near "Crying Lightning," which is a slice of atmospheric, electrifying, psychedelic perfection by one of today's best bands. It was also great live. <3 the Arctics.
